Matcha is a Japanese green tea ground into a fine powder, which has become very popular around the world. Its soft taste and countless health benefits have impressed many. The trendy matcha latte is worth tasting!
Matcha is easy to make a warm cup of heavenly frothy latte, which is perfect for a rainy autumn evening or a cheerful frosty day. A cold matcha latte, on the other hand, is perfect for summer. Next, we will teach you how to make a delicious matcha latte at home.
What does matcha latte contain?
Matcha latte can be made from many different ingredients according to your preferences and needs. However, at its simplest, a good matcha latte only consists of warm milk and matcha powder. We recommend using whole milk, as it has a higher fat content than skimmed milk, which is more suitable for a latte drink.
If you want sweetness in your latte, traditional sugar, honey, maple syrup or, for example, a few dates are perfect. A pinch of vanilla powder or a slice of vanilla ice cream works wonderfully. You can also grate ginger, for example, if you want a spicier taste or relief from a cold.
Vegan matcha latte
A vegan matcha latte is made by replacing cow’s milk with a vegan drink, such as almond, coconut or soy milk. Choose an unsweetened or sweetened milk drink according to your wishes.
A matcha latte made with oat milk can be a bit watery in texture, because for example the fat content of soy milk is more suitable for a latte. However, frothing coconut or soy milk may require a little more time.
The matcha whisk is part of matcha production
The traditional preparation of matcha has been part of the Japanese tea ceremony, where matcha powder is mixed with hot water using a bamboo whisk. This bamboo whisk is called matcha whisk.
The matcha whisk has bristles that facilitate the formation of foam when whisking. In short, a matcha whisk is a bamboo whisk specifically intended for making matcha.
Matcha latte is crowned with fluffy foam
The perfect matcha latte is decorated with delicious, soft foam. However, frothing milk can be a headache. Now we’ll tell you how to whip up a fluffy foam to crown your latte. Equipment for foaming can be found in every home.
What can be used to froth milk?
Use a blender, matcha whisk or, for example, Ikea’s foaming whisk to help you.
Foaming can also be done by heating the milk several times in the microwave for half a minute at a time and shaking it liberally between times. The micro method should only be used when there are no other tools.
Normally, the milk is frothed with the steam nozzle in the espresso machine. However, an espresso machine is a rarer sight in a home kitchen, so frothing milk at home can be done perfectly with ordinary equipment.
This is how you froth milk
Pour all the ingredients into a blender, blend for about 30 seconds and watch the foam start to form OR use a matcha whisk, an espresso maker (if you have one at home) or a standard store-bought whisk to froth.
Try to use very quick wrist movements when making the foam with a matcha whisk or a regular whisk. Avoid touching the base with the matcha whisk as the bristles may bend or break. Blend for at least 30 seconds to create a foam.
The milk to be frothed at home should be warm.
The milk to be frothed with the espresso machine must be refrigerator cold.
Matcha latte at home – instructions for making matcha latte

Ingredients:
1.5 teaspoons of high-quality matcha powder
2.5 dl milk or vegan milk drink
- desired sweetener, such as sugar or honey
Instructions using Blender:
Boil the milk in a saucepan over low heat and let it boil for a few minutes until the milk starts to bubble a little.
Pour the boiled milk and matcha powder into the blender.
Blend/stir with the Blender for a while until the matcha latte begins to form a fluffy foam.
Instructions using a whisk:
Measure matcha powder into a bowl.
Pour half a cup of hot water into a bowl.
Whisk the powder-water mixture a little.
Add milk and whisk.
You can achieve the best foam with the right technique
Milk frothing is a technique. When frothing milk, air must be mixed into the mixture. The most important thing is to achieve a thicker and softer consistency for the milk, which, however, still remains runny. You can do this with a Blender or other electric whisking device or a hand whisk. When using a hand whisk, you should make use of quick wrist movements so that the milk foams up easily.
Good milk foam is spongy and pliable, while bad milk foam is fluffy like cotton candy. The fluffiest foam can usually be made with an electric device or a matcha whisk designed for this purpose.
Matcha latte flavor
The taste of matcha latte combines the softness of whipped milk and the greenness of green tea. This delicious latte drink is also the perfect alternative when you don’t like the taste of green tea as it is, but you want to take advantage of the health benefits of tea.
You can flavor the matcha latte just your own way. Feel free to try different sweeteners and foaming techniques, which give the foam a different texture. Enjoy your matcha latte warm or cold.
